How to Install Nginx on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Nginx (pronounced engine-x) is a free, open source HTTP server and reverse proxy, as well as an IMAP/POP3 proxy server. It is known for its high performance, and uses a small, predictable amount of memory under load.

Installing Nginx with apt-get is simple. SSH to your Pod as root, and run this command:

root@mypod:~# sudo apt-get update
root@mypod:~# sudo apt-get install nginx

Next, start nginx like this:

sudo service nginx start

You can test that this worked by opening a web browser, and going to http://youripaddress/ which should show you a screen that says “Welcome to nginx!”

If you don’t know your ip address, running this command from the command line will show it to you.

ifconfig eth0 | grep inet | awk '{ print $2 }'
